INEC Suspends Imo North Re-run Election Indefinitely
Sequel
to serious disturbances and protest staged by some youths of the All
Progressives Congress (APC) and some women at the Imo state headquarters
of the Independent National Electoral Commission yesterday, INEC has
suspended indefinitely the scheduled rerun slated for today.
According
to the Administrative secretary of the commission in the state, Chinedu
Oburunobi, who addressed journalists yesterday, he stated that INEC was
not comfortable with the protest and disturbance, hence reason for the
suspension of the rerun.
It
would be recalled that hundreds of youths of APC and some women
besieged the INEC office along Port Harcourt road, Owerri as early as 7
am, demanding the removal of some officers of the commission they
claimed belonged to the opposition party.
The rerun exercise arise as a result of the cancellation of the 2015 senatorial election for Imo north won by chief Athan Achonu of the Peoples Democratic Party, challenged by Benjamin Uwajumogu, former Speaker of the state assembly.
Earlier, the APC Youth Leader, Comrade Jeff Nwoha had addressed the crowd at INEC office saying that one Mr. Bello, an indigene of the state was accused of being a longtime and habitual election rigger for the PDP. He alleged that the said Bello was brought as the Head of Operations in INEC office Owerri to rig election for PDP.
